Mumbai Based Journalist Accused of Rape Granted Interim Bail Protection from Arrest

Varun Hiremath, a Mumbai based Journalist has been accused of raping a Pune based 22 year old model in New Delhi. The Delhi High Court granted Hiremath Interim protection from arrest on Friday.

The Interim Protection was granted by a single-judge bench of Justice Mukta Gupta. Hiremath was given interim protection under the condition that he would join the investigation whenever required and put forward his version to verify true fact of the case.

The team of Karanjawala and company consisting of Advocate Sandeep Kapur and others briefed Senior Advocate Kapil Sibbal and Advocate Vijay Aggarwal, representatives of Varun Hiremath.

The Trial Court dismissed Varun Hiremath’s bail plea earlier.

Hiremath was expecting an arrest in relation with the FIR lodged by the 22 year old Pune based woman. The FIR was filed in the Chanakyapuri police station, New Delhi.

Varun Hiremath has been booked under Sections 376(Punishment for rape), 342(Punishment for wrongful confinement), 509(Insulting modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code.

Hiremath is barred from leaving the country, since the Delhi Police issued a lookout order against him.

On February 1, the Bombay High Court declined Hiremath’s transit anticipatory bail after saying that there was no dispute about powers to grant anticipatory bail. The applicant was charged under Section 376 of IPC. The applicant might approach the appropriate court. The court was not inclined to grant such relief in that case.

The FIR stated that the woman had alleged that Hiremath had met her via an online networking and dating app, Tinder, when Hiremath was visiting Pune. He had supposedly advanced into a sexual relationship with the woman.

Later, Varun Hiremath had come to Delhi on February 19 and the woman decided to meet up with him on February 20. They met in Khan Market and afterwards, they went to ITC Maurya Hotel in Chanakyapuri.

The complaint states that the woman was supposedly raped by Hiremath in the mentioned five-star hotel. Varun Hiremath, however, denies these allegations and stated them to be “false and frivolous” as the FIR was registered on February 23, after a hold-up of three days.
